Possibly Picasso is a Paint Your Own Pottery Studio. We are locally owned and operated by Rita Cunningham. Our opening day was Nov. 15th, 2003 and the fun keeps growing. We have over 350 different pottery items to choose from, so there's something for everyone, no matter how old you may be. We specialize in birthday parties and any special events you may want to plan. We believe anyone could "Possibly be a Picasso"!

Rita Cunningham is the owner of Possibly Picasso in the Oakbrook area of Summerville. Customers purchase unfinished ceramics from her and then are provided with the paints to decorate their purchases before she glazes and fires them in the kiln.
As Rita Cunningham sees it, the perfect recipe for artistry is that art doesn't have to be perfect.
Cunningham, the owner of Possibly Picasso in Summerville, specializes in bringing out the artist in everyone through painted ceramic pieces. Customers buy unfinished ceramic pieces, and she provides the paint to let them design them to their tastes.
"We have idea books and stencils. People make it out to be harder than it has to be. They say, 'I'm not an artist.' Well, you don't have to be. I'm not," Cunningham said.
After a customer finishes a new work of art, Cunningham takes the piece, glazes it and fires it in her kiln. Less than a week later, someone has a personalized knickknack to add to a shelf or mantelpiece.
After spending some time as a substitute teacher, Cunningham opened her shop in November 2003. She liked the concept and saw how it worked in other states. She said the most difficult part was deciding on the business' name.
"(The business) is something fun and exciting. I just wanted people to enjoy themselves and don't think they have to be perfect to do something," she said. "I just think everyone could possibly be a Picasso."
Cunningham does very little advertising, relying on word of mouth from happy customers to bring her new business. As expected, the shop handles a lot of birthday parties, but Cunningham said she also gets a lot of business retreats and ladies' groups that come to socialize while working on their art. The surprising part of the business is finding out how much men enjoy what the business has to offer.
"Men enjoy it once they sit down and relax. They enjoy themselves. They say it's very therapeutic," she said. "We do a lot of boy parties. You wouldn't think so, but they enjoy it."
Part of the reason is she provides a variety of things to paint. Snakes, tanks, cars, motorcycles and skulls appeal to boys, while bears, horses and hearts find an audience with girls.
Cunningham said she gets several customers who paint personalized plates and platters, some with handprints or footprints added. She said she just finished her favorite time of year.
"I like Christmas because everyone's excited and they make homemade gifts. Even adults paint and they act like kids," she said

From the studio’s brightly colored walls to its painted ceramics to its passionate owner, everything in Possibly Picasso radiates. The Summerville-based paint-your-own-pottery studio, which opened its doors six years ago this month, is holding an anniversary celebration today, Friday, Nov. 6. Rita Cunningham, the studio’s owner and a Summerville resident, is thanking the community by hosting an anniversary party in which people are invited to enjoy free food, mingle with one another and receive discounts on studio fees, which are normally $5, but will be free through Nov. 15. Cunningham says people of all ages frequent the studio to paint pottery for themselves and for others. People choose from hundreds of ceramic pieces and are provided with paints, brushes, stencils and idea books. When people come here, we hope they find it relaxing, Cunningham said. I like to think of it as cheap therapy. In the half-dozen years since Possibly Picasso opened, Cunningham says she has had the privilege of meeting an assortment of people and making many friends through the studio. The only contemporary paint-your-own-pottery studio in Summerville, Cunningham says owning the studio has been a tremendous experience. It’s all about giving people a place to have fun, paint and enjoy themselves, Cunningham said. I like to say that anybody can be a Picasso.

The anniversary celebration will be held from 5-8 p.m. at the studio, which is located in the Oakbrook Shopping Plaza at 10050 Dorchester Road in Summerville.
